FDA Consumer Safety Officer Joins SDA

Dr. Paul DeLeo Named Director of Environmental Safety

WASHINGTON, DC – April 17, 2007 – Dr. Paul C. DeLeo, who served as a Consumer Safety Officer for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has joined The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) as Director of Environmental Safety.

SDA is the Home of the U.S. Cleaning Product and Oleochemical IndustriesSM, representing manufacturers of household, industrial, and institutional cleaning products, their ingredients and finished packaging; oleochemical producers; and chemical distributors to the cleaning product industry.

Dr. DeLeo was a Consumer Safety Officer for FDA from 2003 to 2007, managing the evaluation of the safety of new food and color additives. Prior to that, he worked as a microbiologist and an environmental scientist for the agency since 1999.

"Paul DeLeo's regulatory and environmental expertise brings added depth to one of SDA's core strengths – our scientific and technical knowledge, proficiency and experience. These attributes help SDA demonstrate the human health and environmental safety of cleaning products and their ingredients," said Ernie Rosenberg, SDA President and CEO.

Dr. DeLeo will have direct responsibility for SDA's technical research and programs addressing regulatory and other initiatives related to environmental safety. This includes guiding research studies pertinent to the environmental fate and effects of cleaning product ingredients.

Besides his experience at FDA, Dr. DeLeo worked as a Senior Scientist at Syracuse Research Corporation in Arlington, VA; an Environmental Engineer at Malcolm Pirnie Inc. in White Plains, NY; in environmental engineering intern stints at the New York State Department of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and as a Rural Water Supply Engineer in Morocco as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Dr. DeLeo has a Ph.D. from Cornell University, where his research focused on environmental microbiology. He also received an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University.
